Title: Your Majesty the Child: Origins of narcissism and self-esteem in children
In the late twentieth century, self-esteem became a touchstone of Western parenting. Western parents believe that children need self-esteem to achieve success and happiness in life, and they are motivated to raise children’s self-esteem. However, parents’ well-intentioned attempts to raise self-esteem, such as inflated praise, may inadvertently breed narcissism. This talk will describe a program of research that examines the nature of narcissism in children, the socialization experiences giving rise to narcissism, and the practices through which parents can raise self-esteem without breeding narcissism.
